Dr. Jed Assam

Board-Certified and Fellowship-Trained Retina Specialist  |

Vitreoretinal Surgeon

Dr. Assam is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retina specialist dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of complex retinal diseases. Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he is proud to serve the community that first inspired his passion for medicine and service.

His clinical expertise includes managing conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal detachment (RD), macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and complications from ocular trauma or surgery. He specializes in retinal laser procedures, intravitreal injections, and advanced vitreoretinal surgery.

Dr. Assam earned a master’s degree in Human Clinical Anatomy from Creighton University before attending medical school at the USD Sanford School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where he served as Chief Resident and was named Intern of the Year. He then pursued a highly competitive two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he trained under nationally recognized leaders in retina care.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Assam integrates evidence-based research and education into his practice to deliver the highest standard of care. He has been involved in aerospace medicine research, including projects in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), exploring the intersection of vision science and flight safety. His academic background in anatomy and ophthalmology has also made him a sought-after instructor and mentor for medical students pursuing hands-on clinical training.

Outside of medicine, he is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, and cooking for friends and family.
